Spanish adjectives - Position
Depending on the type of adjective (limiting adjectives -demonstrative, possessive, undefinite, adjectives which indicate quantity, qualifiers...- or descriptive adjectives) it may be before or after the noun it modifies or it adds information.
1. Position of limiting adjectives: they normally are placed in front of the noun.
Examples:
Mi casa está en la calle Zapatería. (Possessive adjective)
Ese chico moreno es mi primo. (Demonstrative adjective)
Perdón, ¿hay alguna farmacia por aquí? (Indefinite adjective)
Todas las semanas voy al gimnasio. (Quantyfier adjective)
Hay tres pacientes en la sala de espera. (Cardinal number)
Vivo en el cuarto piso. (Ordinal number)
2. Position of descriptive adjectives:
- They normally are placed after the noun. Descriptive adjectives may be placed next to the noun which refers or introduced by a verb.
Examples:
¿Dónde está la falda roja? (Colors)
Ese chico moreno es mi primo. (Physical appearance)
Me gusta más la mesa redonda. (Size and shape)
Juan es un chico muy simpático. (Character)
La última película de Almódovar es muy buena. (Qualyfier)
- When descriptive adjectives are used before the noun, they emphasize or add poetical aspect.
- Several descriptive adjectives change their meaning depending on whether they are used before or after the noun: viejo, grande, bueno, simple, pobre, puro, nuevo, único, medio.
- Some adjectives have two forms depending on whether they are place before or after the noun, long form and shortened or contracted forms: bueno, malo, alguno, ninguno, primero, tercero, santo, grande, cualquiera.
